China has begun construction on what will be the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) River in Tibet, a $167 billion project aimed at boosting clean energy and economic growth. While Beijing touts the dam as a green energy milestone and a stimulus for its slowing economy, neighboring countries India and Bangladesh are alarmed about potential impacts on water flow, agriculture, and millions of people downstream. Environmentalists and human rights advocates have also raised concerns about biodiversity loss, forced relocations, and lack of transparency or consultation. China insists the project is within its sovereign rights and claims there will be no adverse effects on downstream nations. The dam is set to reshape regional geopolitics, water security, and the global renewable energy landscape.
